Vishu 2026 will be observed on Wednesday, April 15. The auspicious Vishu Kani is traditionally viewed at dawn on this day in Kerala and Malayali households worldwide.

What is the meaning of the word Vishu?

The word Vishu comes from the Sanskrit term for 'equal,' signifying the spring equinox. It represents a period of balance between day and night, reminding us to maintain equanimity in life.

What are the items kept in a Vishu Kani?

A traditional Vishu Kani includes an idol of Lord Krishna, Kani Konna (yellow flowers), fruits like mango and jackfruit, a mirror (Vaalkannadi), gold ornaments, coins, and a lit Nilavilakku (lamp).

What is the importance of Vishu Kaineettam?

Vishu Kaineettam is the practice of elders giving money to youngsters and dependents. It symbolizes the sharing of prosperity and the passing of blessings from one generation to the next.

Is Vishu the same as the Malayalam New Year?

Vishu marks the beginning of the astronomical New Year (Medam 1). While the civil new year in Kerala starts on Chingam 1, Vishu is widely celebrated as the cultural and spiritual New Year.

♦ The Science of Equanimity: “Vishu” literally means equal. It marks the spring equinox, reminding us to maintain internal balance (equanimity) between the highs and lows of the coming year.
♦ Abundance in Sight: The ritual arrangement of Kani Konna flowers, gold, and mirrors is a psychological anchor, training the mind to focus on Samriddhi (prosperity) from the very first moment of the year.
♦ Vishu Kaineettam: Beyond wealth, the tradition of elders giving coins to the young represents a flow of grace and the responsibility of the older generation to secure the future of the lineage.
